Graphic & fine artist using collage & mixed media

I studied graphic design at Derby University. I now work full time as a Graphic Designer and in my spare time I work from my own studio producing mix media/collage artworks, using tactics of appropriation and transformation to reflect the fashion and beauty industry and the impact it has on people.

I make dynamic collages from current fashion magazines, books and printed imagery, building up various layers of paper to create depth, then mark marking and colouring the image to change the context of its meaning, then finally adding resin to permanently seal the layers of paper.

Concept:

As a graphic designer Photoshop is a tool I use daily. The use of Photoshop and filters to edit the faces of models and celebrities featured in beauty campaigns; whether in magazines or online has become the norm. As such I feel this sends out a negative message to women that to be beautiful is to be flawless.

These images were created with this in mind, creating layers of collage to mimic the layers of self perception and the mask we wear to cover our true selves.

Influences:

Mira Schendal, Nancy Spero, Hannah Hoch (but I'm not that great with a needle yet), Guerrilla Girls, Barbara Kruger, Gee Vaucher (friend of mine lent me a book on her for inspiration)... I love graffiti art especially Ella and Pitr's huge illustrative pieces.

I also love Sally Hewett's embroidered body parts and Gabriel Moreno's beautiful illustrations.

Exhibitions:

I have been very fortunate to have been able to exhibit my work with shows in Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire, London and Germany.

Many group shows have been through connecting with other local collage artists online and part of different online groups like Collagistes Collective.
